It came upon the midnight clear That glorious song of old From angels bending near the earth To touch their harps of gold Peace on the earth, goodwill to men From heaven's gracious King The world in solemn stillness lay To hear the angels sing Still through the parted skies they come With peaceful wings unfurled And still their heavenly music floats O'er all the weary world Above its sad and lowly plains They bend on hovering wing And over all its Babel sounds The blessed angels sing Though with the woes of sin and strife The world has suffered long Beneath the angel-strain have rolled Two thousand years of wrong Look now, for glad and golden hours Come swiftly on the wing When all the world gives back the song Which now the angels sing

What Child is this who laid to rest On Mary's lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet While shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King Whom shepherds guard and angels sing Haste, haste to bring Him laud The Babe, the Son of Mary So bring Him incense, gold, and myrrh Come peasant, king, to own Him The King of kings salvation brings Let loving hearts enthrone Him Raise, raise a song on high The virgin sings her lullaby Joy, joy, for Christ is born The Babe, the Son of Mary
5.
Oh, come, oh, come, Emmanuel And ransom captive Israel That mourns in lonely exile here Until the Son of God appears Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel O come, Thou Wisdom from on high And order all things, far and nigh To us the path of knowledge show And cause us in her ways to go Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel Oh, come, thou Dayspring, come and cheer Our spirits by Thine advent here Disperse the gloomy clouds of night And death's dark shadows put to flight Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel Oh, come, oh, come, Emmanuel

Little Town 03:32
O little town of Bethlehem How still we see thee lie Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting Light The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight For Christ is born of Mary And gathered all above While mortals sleep and angels keep Their watch of wondering love O morning stars together Proclaim the holy birth And praises sing to God the King And Peace to men on earth Little town with such great hope You hold my King tonight How silently, how silently The wondrous gift is given So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of His heaven No ear may hear His coming But in this world of sin Where meek souls will receive him still The dear Christ enters in Little town with such great hope You hold my King tonight Little town with such great hope You hold my King tonight You hold my King tonight
7.
Joy to the world, the Lord is come Let earth receive her King Let every heart prepare Him room And heaven and nature sing And heaven and nature sing And heaven, and heaven, and nature sing Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns Let us our songs employ While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains Repeat the sounding joy Repeat the sounding joy Repeat, repeat the sounding joy Joy to the world, creation sings The mountains raise their song The oceans roar, the rivers praise The wonders of His love The wonders of His love The wonders, wonders of His love
8.
A day, bright day of glory Glad day that ends our woe A day that tells of triumph Against our vanquished foe For us this Christmas sunrise This bright December morn So sing, let us be joyous For Christ, our Lord is born A day, bright day of glory Arise, the light has come The darkness bows its head to The brightness of Your dawn For us this Christmas sunrise This bright December morn So sing, let us be joyous For Christ, our Lord is born A day, bright day of glory Is born to rescue us The victory is given And Death is swallowed up For us this Christmas sunrise This bright December morn So sing, let us be joyous For Christ, our Lord is born

Silent Night 03:59
Silent night, holy night All is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin mother and child Holy infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace Sleep in heavenly peace Silent night, holy night Shepherds quake at the sight Glories stream from heaven afar Heav’nly hosts sing Hallelujah Christ the Savior is born Christ the Savior is born Silent night, holy night Son of God love's pure light Radiant beams from thy holy face With the dawn of redeeming grace Jesus, Lord at thy birth Jesus, Lord at thy birth Silent night, holy night All is calm, all is bright Round yon virgin mother and child Holy infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace Sleep in heavenly peace
10.
O Holy Night 03:56
O holy night, the stars are brightly shining It is the night of our dear Savior's birth Long lay the world in sin and sorrow pining 'Til He appeared and the soul felt its worth A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn Fall on your knees O, hear the angel voices O night divine, O night when Christ was born O night divine O night, O night divine Led through the night by star so sweetly gleaming Here came the wise men from a distant land So led by light, a faith serenely beaming With hopeful hearts, by His cradle we stand The King of kings lay thus in lowly manger For all our trials, born to be our Savior Fall on your knees O, hear the angel voices O night divine, O night when Christ was born O night divine O night, O night divine

about

It was 2007 the first time Jackie and I made a Christmas album. We had never even played at a church yet, and Map & Compass was almost a decade in the future. I don't know what made us do it, other than a lifetime of love for Christmas carols. We hand stamped the cover with rubber and ink, and gave this little six-song Christmas EP out to everyone we knew. It was called "Raise A Song On High", and we used it as our audition tape for the first music ministry we ever joined.

Eight years and four hundred Sunday services later, we got the idea to make a full-length Christmas album. (For some awful reason we got this idea in mid-November.) Three hectic, beautiful, creative weeks later, the ten-song version of "Raise A Song On High" came out. It shared some of the same DNA as the EP we made in college — three of the arrangements were the same, and we used the rubber stamps for the cover again — but most of it was brand new. It had everything from rock guitar to bluegrass mandolin to medieval harp and I was deeply proud of it.

It's been six years since then, another three-hundred-plus Sundays, and we've had time to refine these songs, to notice what didn't work in the recordings, and which parts we always end up playing differently live. This new version is re-mixed, re-mastered, and partly re-recorded, but it still carries pieces of all the other versions it's been. Like each of us, it is new and also the same. And it still has those ink stamps on the cover.
